CANBY POLICE ARREST FLEEING HIT AND RUN DUII DRIVER

On 11-27-07 at 4:12pm, Canby Police were called to the area of N Grant Street and NW 1st on the report of a Hit and Run traffic crash involving two vehicles.

One of the vehicle's drivers, a 76 year old female, drove her severely damaged 1988 Toyota Camry to the Canby Police Department, which is about a block away from the crash scene, after the other vehicle involved fled the scene.

The 76 year old victim driver was able to obtain a license plate from the vehicle that fled. From that information, Officer Christopher Macom was able to locate the suspect vehicle, a 1987 Ford Bronco, at 567 N Cedar Street in Canby.

As Officer Macom was attempting to contact the suspect driver at that residence, the suspect ran out a back door.

Code Enforcement Officer Kari Inness was in the area of NW 6th and N Cedar Street when the suspect ran from Officer Macom. Code Officer Inness saw the suspect cross the street in front of her and go into a back yard located in the area of NW 6th and N Cedar Street.

Code Officer Inness advised the responding Officers of the suspects location and the suspect was located and taken into custody.

The suspect was identified as Canby resident CRAIG LAWRENCE AXELBAUM DOB: 10-1-56. AXELBAUM was charged with DUII, Hit and Run, Reckless Driving, and Eluding a Police Officer. He had a .12% BAC. AXELBAUM was lodged at Clackamas County Jail and the case is being referred to the Canby City Attorney.

The 76 year old victim driver was assessed by Canby Fire and was found not to be injured.
