Canby Police Department Department Gang Enforcement Strategies
Strategy 1
With the recent approval of the full time Gang Enforcement Officer, the police department will
begin to implement the strategies previously outlined to the Council. The Gang Officer's duties
include but are not limited to the following; proactive enforcement of criminal laws as they relate
to current gang issues, leading investigations of major gang related crimes occurring within the city,
continuing the partnership established with the Oregon Department of Justice to gather and document intelligence information on
local gang members and associates, and providing educational outreach to parents, school staff, business leaders, and citizens
on recognizing gang activity to become vigilant in communicating suspected gang related issues to police.
Strategy 2
Attend monthly Metro Area Gang Intelligence meetings, which include Gang Enforcement Officers and respresentatives from agencies
within Clackamas, Marion, and Multnomah Counties. The meetings are typically attended by approximately forty Officers, and have been
hosted by the Canby Police Department for the past six months.
Strategy 3
Continue pursuance of gang suppression grant proposal through Senator Kurt Schrader and Representative Wayne Scott to secure
additonal funding for gang enforcement and education.
Strategy 4
Establish and maintain a good working relationship with the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office and City Attorney
to insure the successful prosecution of gang related crimes.
Strategy 5
Foster interdepartmental communication and cooperation from Code Enforcement, Parks Department, Public Works, Canby Area
Transit System, Canby Schoolds District and SRO Officer, City Attorney, and the media through monthly meetings.
Strategy 6
Establish and maintain a good working relationship with special units such as the East Multnomah County Gang Team (which
includes officers from Gresham, Troutdale, and Fairview Polide Departments), the Clackamas County Drug and Street Crime Task
Force (involving representatives from local, county, and state law enforcement, District Attorney's office, and parole and
probation), and the Department of Justice Gang Task Force (involving representatives from DOJ, FBI, and stte and local law
enforcement).
Strategy 7
Continue Community Policing efforts through the Crime Prevention Team to assist neighborhoods in developing and implementing
effective crime prevention measures as they relate to gang issues.
Strategy 8
Open and timely communications to the City Administrators office, who will then forward the information to the Mayour
and City Council.
